Hello, I am Dr. Todd L. Havens. I grew up in the DeVeaux section of
Niagara Falls, attended local public schools and currently live in the
same area of the city with my wife Dianne and my children Jenna and Jack.
My interest in dentistry goes back to my childhood, in large part
because both my parents were in the dental profession. My mother is a
Registered Dental Hygienist who recently celebrated her 50th anniversary
of working in the dental profession. I always loved going to the dentist
as a child, not surprising since my mom was cleaning my teeth and
letting my brother and I look in all the drawers of instruments, not
just the “prize drawer”. My father, now deceased, was trained as a
dental technician in the US Army Dental Corps and served during WWII
and the Korean conflict. On many school holidays my Dad took John
and I to work with him and we were able to see all the technology
involved in making dental prostheses.
In 1993 I graduated from the University of Buffalo with
a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I worked for 5 years as a
Psychiatric Nursing Assistant at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center during
my undergraduate education. In the year prior to being accepted to
dental school I worked as a Social Worker for Family and Children’s
Service of Niagara. In 1994, I began attending the SUNY/Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and graduated with honors in 1998.
Since 1999 I have been a part time Clinical Assistant Instructor at the
dental school, and find this to be an excellent source of continuing
education, and a very rewarding experience being able to educate
future dentists. I joined Dr. Bonghi and his staff in July 2000
after completing a 2-year General Practice Dental Residency at the
Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Buffalo.
I have been an officer in the United States Army Reserve Dental Corps
since September 2000, and was activated in support of Operation Enduring/Iraqi Freedom for four months in 2004. My brother and I were both assigned to the Dental Clinic at Fort Drum, New York to augment the base dental resources by expediting the dental care for deploying and returning soldiers from the Iraqi and Afghan theatres. Following this tour of duty I was awarded the Army Achievement and Global War on Terrorism medals.
I am also a staff dentist at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, where I provide emergency coverage, and treat patients in the hospital dental clinic.
I am currently a member of the Niagara County Dental Society, the Eighth District Dental Society, the American Dental Association, and the Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity.
My twin brother John and I have talked since dental school of practicing together, and in the fall of 2004 this became possible, and has been a very enjoyable experience.
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, bicycling, and hiking – especially in the Niagara River Gorge and Adirondacks. I also enjoy photography, local history, and geocaching (basically a “treasure hunt” using a global positioning unit (GPS).
I find my background in Psychology helps me better understand and reassure those
patients feeling anxious about their dental visit. I have also received
additional training in the use of Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas).
I enjoy doing all phases of general, children’s, and cosmetic dentistry. I always look forward to welcoming new
patients and their families into our practice and seeing our existing patients at their regular visits.
